Description

The JBL GTO 629 Grand Touring Series is widely recognized as the gold standard in mid-range coaxial car speakers. Engineered by HARMAN to solve common factory speaker weaknesses, the GTO 629 combines high-grade materials, patented woofer cone tech, and unique tweeter adjustments to deliver articulate vocal midrange and physical bass response from standard door locations.
UniPivot™ & Adjustable Tweeter Level (+3dB / 0dB)
Most coaxial speakers fire treble straight at your ankles because of low door mount locations. JBL’s UniPivot™ technology allows you to physically swivel the edge-driven soft-dome tweeter toward listener ear level. A built-in push-button tweeter level control also lets you instantly switch between 0dB (neutral) and +3dB (bright) to customize sound brightness based on your door panel placement.
Carbon-Injected Plus One™ Woofer Cones
Featuring JBL’s patented Plus One™ cone architecture, the woofer cone extends closer to the edge of the basket. This provides up to 30% more effective cone area than other 6.5-inch speakers in its class. Carbon-injection makes the cone lightweight yet extraordinarily rigid, handling fast drum hits and deep bass notes without distortion.
True 4-Ohm Low-Impedance Efficiency
Factory speaker wires often choke power due to thin gauge resistance. The JBL GTO 629 utilizes a low-impedance 3-ohm voice coil that safely compensates for wire resistance, effectively operating as a “True 4-Ohm” speaker at the amplifier. This allows your receiver or amplifier to extract maximum wattage for cleaner, louder output.
Edge-Driven Soft-Dome Tweeters
Unlike cheap PEI balanced dome tweeters that sound harsh at high volumes, the GTO 629 uses edge-driven soft-dome tweeters. This delivers smooth vocal transitions, detailed cymbal decays, and non-fatiguing high frequencies even during extended drives.

WHY COAXIAL SPEAKERS ARE RECOMMENDED FOR REAR DOORS
-
Perfect Rear-Fill Soundstage Balance: Front-seat passengers benefit most from front component setups where separated tweeters pull the main vocal stage up to ear level. Installing coaxial speakers in the rear doors provides full-range “rear-fill” sound to round out the cabin atmosphere without pulling the main soundstage backward away from the driver.
-
No Unnecessary Panel Modifications: Most vehicle rear doors lack factory tweeter cutouts or dedicated A-pillar pods. Coaxial speakers feature center-mounted tweeters directly over the woofer cone, delivering complete full-range audio without requiring custom holes or mounting pods in your rear door panels.
-
Simplified Wiring & Clean Installation: Coaxial speakers integrate the tweeter and crossover network into the single driver chassis, eliminating the need to mount external crossover boxes inside rear door cavities where moisture and vibration can cause long-term wear.
-
Ideal Complement to Front Component Systems: Pairing front component speakers with rear coaxial speakers (like the JBL GTO 629) creates a balanced, matching sonic signature throughout the car using identical driver materials and voicings.
STEP-BY-STEP INSTALLATION GUIDE
-
Door Panel Removal: Carefully remove door panel trim screws and unclip the plastic panel using a trim removal tool. Disconnect electrical harnesses for power windows/locks and set the door card aside safely.
-
Factory Speaker Removal: Unbolt or drill out the rivets holding the OEM speaker driver in place. Unplug the factory wire harness from the speaker basket.
-
Adapter Ring & Foam Installation: Mount a vehicle-specific 6.5″ adapter bracket to the metal door chassis using corrosion-resistant screws. Apply sound-dampening foam or butyl tape between the adapter ring and metal panel to prevent air leaks and rattling.
-
Wiring Integration: Connect a plug-and-play speaker harness adapter to the original factory plug, or solder terminal quick-connects directly to the leads. Ensure polarity is correct (+ to +, – to –) to maintain in-phase bass performance.
-
Mounting & Acoustic Aiming: Secure the JBL GTO 629 into the adapter ring using the provided stainless steel mounting hardware. Gently pivot the UniPivot™ tweeter upward toward the seating area, and set the 0dB/+3dB push-button depending on door panel mesh thickness.
-
Testing & Reassembly: Test audio balance and tone before reassembling the door. Once verified, clip the door panel back into position and secure all trim hardware.
